ERF 1893. Parkhurst. Johannesburg. South Africa.
Project Type: Commercial – Interior
Client : No-End Contemporary Art Gallery
Program : Commercial – Additions + Alterations
Status : Design Development – April 2022
Value : R 4.5 Million (US $250 000)
Area : 360m²
Exploring a complimentary symbiosis of two different programmes within the same architectural domain.
The anticipated architectural and functional transformation was set within an existing residential property in Parkhurst, alongside a busy thoroughfare.
The brief was dynamically formulated and communicated by the owner-couple, sharing a distinctive ailurophiliac (a lover of cats) interest! Conceptually, a creative, playful co-existence of two architectural programmes was envisaged to include a gallery and an exclusive hotel for feline guests.
The development and execution of the project brief was enhanced by a close client-architect communication and a shared creative vision.
Features:
- The gallery occupies a bold presence at the street frontage and is intended to draw passing public interest.
- The development of the ‘home for cats’ challenged notions of scale and called for considerations of a differing “client” within the ambit of “new architecture”.
The “new architecture” approach, combined in collaboration with Patsy and French to culminate in the design and detail of a luxury cat retreat, offering a series of elegant suites with home-style comforts, and indoor atriums , creating a feline wonderland where cats can relax and play – ensuring a stress-free stay for our cat ‘clients’
