Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. South Africa.
Project Type: Residential – Additions & Alterations
Client : Tshwane University of Technology
Program : Education – New Build
Status : Design Development – January 2021
Value : R 40 Million (US $2 200 000)
Area : 3 100m²
Reconfiguration of an existing design proposal for an administrative block in order to optimize spatial utility within an enhanced aesthetic.
The allocated site is within the campus of the University of Technology in Tshwane, Pretoria.
Working in collaboration with Shabangu Architects, the envisaged project was for the re-configuration of an existing design proposal relating to a campus-based administrative block. The targeted areas for redevelopment were considerations of spatial optimization in utility and fluidity of operations within a cohesive, enhanced aesthetic / architectural ‘language’.
The proposed ‘Z’ formation, extended the opportunity for north facing facades and created two courtyards, enclosed by the space. A core area, at the junction of the two elongated masses ‘houses’ all service and lobbies and in turn, creates a central hub of operations.
The selected utilization of narrow floor plates (12.5m) served to maximize the infiltration of daylight from both sides of the building and allow for external views throughout. Careful considerations of the glare potential prompted the introduction of solar screening.
A ‘green roof’ was designed as an ‘active park’, providing tenants with opportunities for relaxation, socialization and for informal, work-related meetings.
