Namib Sands

ERF 3102. Walvis Bay Namibia.

Project Type: ResidentialAdditions & Alterations

Client : Mr Bada
Program : Commercial  – New Build
Status : Design Development – July 2023
Value : R 4.5 Million (US $250 000)
Area : 900m²

Developing a ‘bespoke’ commercial hub, bearing strong contextual resonance.

The envisaged commercial centre was located in the port city of Walvis Bay, along Namibia’s Western coast, at its interface with the Atlantic Ocean. The activation of fishing and cruise ships, alongside the appeal of an abundance of natural attractions ensure an on-going and expanding population presence in the region.

The brief was for the design of a destination commercial zone on a  contained scale, responsive to multiple / flexible use and reflective of the indigenous appeal of the region (complimentary contextual integration) A notable ‘feature’ within this scope was the opportunity provided by the client for close interaction between the developing tenant mix and the architectural team.

An inviting street interface in combination with a bold rammed earth identification feature wall, established an impressive presence within the prevailing bustling local context.

A courtyard core space (half covered/open, double volume) provided an interactive forum for relaxation, socialization and entertainment. The centrality and orientation of the courtyard ensures protection from the prevailing local elements (wind, rain, sand)

The unique opportunity to liaise directly with the tenant mix in the design concept phase, allowed for the configuration of mutually complimentary and responsive space programs.
