Student Housing
Doornfontein. Johannesburg. South Africa.
Project Type: Residential – New Build – Multi Unit
Client: Uzamile CC
Program: Residential – New Build – Multi Unit
Status: Design Development
Value: R 30 Million (US $1 900 000)
Area: 22 000m²
The brief was for a multi-storey student housing complex inclusive of 200 units responding to the multiplicity of student learning and living needs.
The programme envisaged a complex which was sustainable, low maintenance, financially viable and bearing a distinctive identity. The full extent of the structure was extended to the edge of the site, placing it at the e=urban edge of the street, facilitating student access and creating a close contextual presence.
Elements of cost, low maintenance and sustainability were advanced through materiality, layered texturing, a strong distinctive colour palette and replicating layouts. The incorporation of courtyards, common enclaves and private balconies, created opportunities for social interaction, relaxation and ease of circulation.
