House Limbada

PTN ‘D’ of Farm 396a. Makeni. Lusaka. Zambia.

Project Type: ResidentialNew Build

Client: Limbada Family
Program: ResidentialNew Build
Status: Construction -August 2020
Value: R 6 Million (US $330 000)
Area: 1105m²

The brief was to design a family home for a family of six in Lusaka, Zambia. The proposed design “stretched” out the house across the full extent of the site to embrace the view and optimize the north-facing exposure. Complementing the northern facade, an extensive wrap around patio was included for large scale outdoor living, and shelter from the elements.

The private / public spatial arrangement was carefully considered to ensure that the two “wings” were integrated but also distinct / separate in their accommodation. The entrance provided a private / public convergence forum. At this juncture, the prayer room was placed, symbolically connecting both wings “at the heart of the home”. Within the private domain, three internal courtyards adjoin the family living area and bedrooms, providing secure, sheltered and aesthetically contained outdoor relaxation spaces. The public quarter allows for a connection between the entrance forecourt, entertainment area, and swimming pool, without compromising privacy.

The natural aesthetic of the site was reflected through the extensive use of existing rock on the site. It was prioritized in the construction of accent features throughout the dwelling, “rooting” the house into its context.

The project provided an opportunity for a joint cooperative approach between the architects (US),the client, and the project coordinator (Colab). The synergic tone of the final design bears testimony to the above 3-way effective multi-disciplinary co-operation.
