The project presented as an opportunity to translate the clients brief for the design of a contemporary high-veld vernacular dwelling into an inspired architectural expression based on a well-articulated linear design formulation.

The proposed residence, intended for the singular use of the client, focused strongly on the consideration of contextual integration, a simple aesthetic, “indigenous” materiality alongside practical considerations of privacy and security within an extensive precinct in the Letamo Estate. The spatial arrangement of the dwelling sought to accommodate the clients requirement of a “courtyard house” without the associated “inward” / “closed-in” connotations of such an approach. Accordingly the courtyard is situated at the South-end of the house, providing the sought for privacy, security and reflective space, while allowing for the North elevation to maximize utilization of the natural vistas and celebrate the uninterrupted surrounds. Furthermore, the sensitive contextual interpretation evident in the placement of the structure “into” the site advances the visual connection of the collective surrounds.

The farm aesthetic is advanced through the design of simple building blocks, seamlessly flowing into a contemporary whole and capped on either end by 2 feature gable walls topped with asymmetrical roofs. Choices in the material palette, inter alia the construction of the gable walls with rammed earth, the inclusion of rock walls, Kliplok sheeting  and natural tones of gamma zenith advance impressions of the texture born from the site.
