Project Type:

Indoor Pool

Holding 69. Modderfontein. Johannesburg. South Africa.

Project Type: Leisure

Client: Aadil Adamjee
Program: Leisure
Status: Complete – January 2019
Value: R 8 Million (US $440 000)
Area: 350m²

The indoor pool construct was intended as a forum for family gatherings, physical activation and healing. The enclosure was to house a 16 x 8m swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and recreational space within the context of a pre-existing Arabic / Moroccan typology.

The layout of the pool enclosure was carefully curated, evolving into a “courtyard” space, synthesizing with the family homes with an organic form of convergence. The generation of an encompassing structure to localize and define the pool space was achieved through the design and construction of 64 concrete columns, radiating from a central point. This arrangement allowed for “slithers” of serene, naturally dappled light to permeate into the enclosure. Advancing a natural aesthetic, abundant plant life, water features and landscaping within the enclosure were included to harmonize with the green, on-site peripheral context.

The above cited architectural arrangement of the indoor pool on site presented an opportunity for a second purpose. It was deemed possible and desirable to utilize the roof of the pool enclosure as the basis of a play activation area above. This concept found expression in the ensuing Putter-Putter design undertaken upon completion of the indoor pool.
