Holding 34 & 35. Modderfontein. Johannesburg. South Africa.
Project Type: Residential – Multi-Unit – Additions & Alterations
Client: Muneer Adamjee
Program: Residential – Multi Unit – New Build
Status: Design Development – September 2015
Value: R 20 Million (US $1 100 000)
Area: 4 500m²
This project was driven through the medium of a competition in which a selected group of architects were requested to develop their own, distinctive architectural interpretations.
The submitted proposal responded strongly to elements of localization, privacy, landscape and community integration. The above criteria prompted a vertically staggered courtyard typology, optimising the view potential of the housing and providing opportunities for resident integration. A variation in size and layout assured a wide-spectrum of appeal and marketability.
A distinguishable feature of the development was a series of vertical green screen walls, enclosing the outdoor patios of each unit. This feature provided seasonal privacy, collective synthesizing and softening the urban context with the surrounding green landscape.
