Project Type:

Vulture Enclosure

Johannesburg Zoo. Johannesburg. South Africa.

Project Type: Leisure

Client: Johannesburg Zoo
Program : Leisure
Status: Complete – November 2019
Value: R 200 000 (US $11 000)
Area: N / A

The enclosure housing the Cape Vultures at the Johannesburg Zoo has been re-calibrated to include a breeding wall. We were commissioned to design and develop the concept optimally and within budgetary constraints.

The brief was for the design and construction of a wall bearing the required elements to encourage the breeding of the vultures. The specifications which would be required for the breeding wall were established in consultation with VULPRO. The functionality of the wall was extended to simultaneously provide a recreational wall for the adjoining Verreaux Eagle enclosure. Attention to the structure, composition and materiality were carefully considered within the context.

The dynamic solution has been adopted and constructed by Wild Exposure. The anticipated / imminent introduction of female vultures to the enclosure should herald the appearance of chicks.
