The design of a high-end family home, synthesising form and function.
The selected site is nestled within the exclusive suburban Greenstone enclave situated in Modderfontein in the eastern periphery of Johannesburg.
The directive was for a dynamic, upscale contemporary home to accommodate a growing family. Capacity for evolving family requirements and related accommodation, independent co-living, the inclusion of a multi-purpose ‘man cave’ and a strong emphasis on entertainment potential characterized the brief.
The home exemplifies standards of elevated living that balance aesthetics and practicality. Designed with bold form & function in mind, a notable design feature – a spinewall – seamlessly orientates and integrates the varying living spaces along the way. The rammed earth spinewall provides visual cohesion to the dynamically articulated design profile
The design philosophy of this home centers around clean lines, light, open spaces and a connection to nature. The material palette supports elements of sustainability, diversity, enhancement and connectivity with context.
The home presents as an architecturally articulated composition embracing all aspects of family life.

The project entailed a re-design of the internal spaces within an outdated, unwieldy, “tired” Killarney apartment. The client’s objective was to carry out a cost-effective reorganisation that would improve the marketability of the unit intended for sale.
Compliance with the prevailing specification set by the buildings trustees board and operating within the structural parameters of the unit, a total “opening up” was carried out. The internal corridor was completely removed and an open-plan arrangement adopted. The combined entrance, kitchen and dining areas provided a well-connected space for interaction. The 3 x bedrooms were additionally recalibrated extensively in layout, orientation and finishes. All gaining access to ensuite bathroom facilities. A new guest WC was added to the entrance to ensure privacy within the bedroom wing.
