Coimbra is a university town on the Mondego River with a rich heritage and an increasing tourism sector. The aim of this project is to update/modernise and extract value out of an existing semi-detached three storey block. Thick granite stone walls caracterise the cellar nature of the spatial arrangement. By ‘opening up’ the living areas with an open plan kitchen the spaces work harder and become more livable. The basement apartment is  considered unfit for habitation due to the lack of light and ventilation. To remedy this, the ground at the street edge is removed adding a small courtyard at basement level with the required ventilation and light.
