Residential Projects» New Build

Project Type:

Earth House

ERF 279. Chartwell A.H. Johannesburg. South Africa.

Project Type: Residential – New Build

Client: Miss Leonsins
Program: Residential – New Build
Status: Design Development – January 2019
Value: R 1 Million (US$ 70,000)
Area: 120m²

Exploring the symbolic relationship between architecture and landscape.

The envisioned project was situated in Chartwell within an expansive, picturesque country property in the periphery of the Johannesburg suburbia.

The brief was for the evolution of a sustainable, multi-sensorial retreat typology, embedded in the landscape, bearing a strong symbiotic relationship with context in location, operation and view.

The programme of spaces (a residential retreat and healing, meditation and dance spaces)
was developed as a collective journey providing a unique opportunity to create a sanctuary, rich in opportunities to disconnect from the ‘outside world’ and connect with nature and oneself.

A calm and cocooning design ethos was consistently implemented reflecting the philosophy of “Wabi-Sabi”.

Wabi Sabi: The Japanese Art of Impermanence

Taken from the Japanese words wabi, which translates to less is more, and sabi, which means attentive melancholy, wabi-sabi refers to an awareness of the transient nature of earthly things and a corresponding pleasure in the things that bear the mark of this impermanence.

An awareness of finding beauty in imperfection and acceptance of the natural cycle of life.
