Project Type:

Monument Building

ERF 2194. Krugersdorp. Johannesburg. South Africa.

Project Type: RESIDENTIAL – MULTI-UNIT – ADDITIONS & ALTERATIONS

Client: Mr & Mrs de Castro
Program: Residential – Multi Unit – Additions & Alterations
Status: Complete – March 2023
Value: R 3.5 Million (US $230 000)
Area: 2 300m²

Transforming an existing programme into student accommodation.

The existing heritage building was situated on a busy street context within the changing environment of the Krugersdorp Central Business District.

The brief was for the transformation of a multi-storey building into student accommodation. More specifically, the directive was to reconfigure the existing footprint to accommodate retail at the ground floor level, maximize student accommodation on floors 1-4 and develop a common interactive social space on the roof for varying resident’s use.

The transformation sought to ensure that all redefined areas were comfortably accommodated within the existing footprint, in proportion, natural light and ventilation.

A notable feature was the reconfiguration of the roof area (previously neglected/unused). This area was dynamically reimagined to create a comfortable and safe convergence point overlooking the city-scape and offering opportunities for social interaction, relaxation and the carryout of related activities – kitchen, laundry, study areas.
