Project Type:

Step-Up House

ERF 679. Craighall Park. Johannesburg. South Africa.

Project Type: RESIDENTIAL – ADDITIONS & ALTERATIONS

Client: Mr & Mrs Robertson
Program: Residential – Additions & Alterations
Status: Design  – August 2023
Value: R 500,000 (US $27 000)
Area: 200m²

Transforming the facade of an existing dwelling to create visual and contextual connection.

The existing home is situated at the apex of a steep slope in the Craighall suburb overlooking the green belt of Delta Park.

The brief was for the infusion of a fresh, contemporary facade to transform the existing home within its natural context.

The architectural intervention was a 2-pronged response:

  • To create a new plug-on facade for the existing structure, generating a contemporary, cohesive impression. This was achieved by extruding a mild steel grid structure onto the existing facade –  accommodating for privacy, natural  light and ventilation.
  • To integrate the home with the landscape seamlessly. This was achieved through a graduated, stepped approach through descending levels, providing different layers of connectivity.
