Project Type: Commercial – New Build
Client: MTF Consultants
Program : Commercial – New Build
Status: Design Development – April 2019
Value: R 20 Million (US $1 100 000)
Area: 1 500m²
The prevailing post-apartheid marginalization of disadvantaged communities provided the backdrop to this project. The developer envisaged a social upliftment programme, responding to contextual community needs for basic amenities through trade.
This collaborative project amounted to an exploration of the potential of using locally sourced prefabricated shipping containers as the “building blocks” for a small-scale user-friendly, courtyard-type commercial hub. Architecturally, the aim was to plan for a creatively conceived interactive configuration as a facilitatory medium to counter the constraints of container use.
The use of prefabricated containers was put forward as a fast, uncomplicated, viable, relatively inexpensive, transportable basis for the generation of a community trading forum. It was anticipated that each container would be fully equipped in order to support independent operations, inter alia, spaza shop, bakery, hairdresser, bank & offices.
The overall package was inclusive of the opportunity of training of the potential tradesman. The idea was to partner with the government in its fight against chronic unemployment and lack of skill development. The perspective was to create a prototype as a generic base which would be replicated elsewhere as a model for small-scale community activation empowerment.
