Client: I-Prop (Pty) Ltd
Program: Commercial – New Build
Status: Design Development – February 2017
Value: – – –
Area: N/A
The traditional petrol stops of the distinct past, have undergone a transformation – frequently extending into commercial and entertainment hubs, relying on extensive operational cost and arguably providing impersonal spaces of refreshment. Responding to the adobe aspects and adhering to the global movement towards developing environmentally friendly and energy efficient businesses, the client sought to expand / diversifying the programmatic and visual operation of the all-important South African “stop”.
The prevailing aim was to develop a prototype concept, generic in its formulation. Architecturally, the multiple mediums of sustainability (solar panels, rainwater harvesting) were intently accentuated as visual “markers” to generate a recognizable identity for the new fill-up brand.
The layout provided varied opportunities for small-scale community activation / participation. These included: rent-a-plug, rent-a-bike station, community green space, event spaces, car wash and a sale of crops in adjoining allotments.
