We were asked to design a strip mall in the rural community of Sephaku in Limpopo, in collaboration with Design Signature Architects. After visiting the site, it was clear that due to the context, site conditions and budgetary constraints, the standard strip mall wasn’t appropriate nor feasible. A decision was taken to conceptually approach the scheme as a Shopping Village, creating a porous, human-scale streetscape. This allows a range of social, civic, retail and commercial opportunities to develop and work together.
