Cnr Juta & Melle Street. Johannesburg. South Africa.
Project Type: Commercial – Additions and Alterations
Client: Henry Cock
Program: Commercial – Additions and Alterations
Status: Design Development – November 2014
Value: – – –
Area: N / A
The design intervention was located within the downtown Braamfontein precinct. Specifically, the existing area requiring reconfiguration encompassed 4 restaurants operating alongside each other at ground level.
One of the restaurants, 86 Republic sought the collaboration of the adjoining restaurants to collectively support and finance an additional platform at the first-floor level. This would provide an area of mixed-use by all patrons, within a relaxed and securely demarcated area.
A distinctive vertical yellow timber louvred screen wall was designed along the edge of the building to encompass a stairway accessing the first-floor level. The wooden construction was characterized by an intentional “architectural simplicity”: raw in its materiality, lightweight, easy and quickly constructed within its context. Providing a “bookmark” to the building, demarcating the area of circulation while providing a colourful and distinctive recognizable brand.
